For me, quitting was not an option because I was at a crisis point in my life. I needed to get the weight off for health reasons, not just vanity. I was no longer a teenager who believed the ads that claimed I could lose 15 pounds in two weeks. I knew I had a long road ahead of me to lose the weight and then a life-long challenge to keep it off.
The discipline I showed during my weight-loss journey would need to become a permanent part of my life and, for the first time ever, I became fully cognizant of that fact and embraced it. I could never return to my old ways.
With food no longer a major player in my life—no longer my comfort when I was sad, my pick-me-up when I was tired, my hobby when I was bored—I needed to fill myself up in other ways. I needed new tools for staying motivated during my weight-loss journey and beyond. Without them, I knew the weight would creep back on just like it had in the past.
